Elgin Sports Hall of Fame announces scholarship winners
The Elgin Sports Hall of Fame Foundation recently announced the winners of $25,000 in scholarships to seven high schools with residents from Elgin.
The amount of the scholarships awarded is up $5,000 from last year and brings the total of scholarship money awarded to $231,500 since the Hall began awarding scholarships. The student-athletes receiving the scholarships either live within the city of Elgin and/or attend high school in Elgin.
The money for the scholarships is raised from donations from members and friends of the organization as well as an annual golf outing in September.
This year's scholarship winners are:
Elgin High - Caris Alan, Kevin Eck, Shannon Forney, Erik McGinn, Lindsey Morrow, Tom Roth and Mary Taylor;
Larkin - Antonio Feliciano, Lucas Geier, Kelli Johnson, Jon Meidel, Ashley Somphonhpakdy and Britney Whitehead;
St. Edward - Tess Barry, Josh Dix, Molly Kelly, Miguel Martinez, Jim Waclawik;
Burlington Central - Alexandria VanOost;
Elgin Academy - Kristin Cella and Andrew Stuart;
South Elgin - Alex Sanchez and Josh Smith;
Westminster Christian - Dan Graves and Zach Holmer.
The Elgin Sports Hall of Fame Foundation is also holding a night out at a Kane County Cougars game on June 18 in the left field picnic area. Larkin graduate, former major leaguer and Elgin Sports Hall of Famer Roger Smithberg will throw out the first pitch that night. Tickets are $30 each and include an all-you-can-eat dinner prior to the game and a fireworks show following the game.
