MCC's public garden a welcome respite

Come take a stroll in the garden - the Demonstration Garden (also referred to as an Idea Garden) at McHenry County College, a hidden gem and a peaceful venue from the daily hectic schedules of everyday life. Stop by your favorite coffee shop, and then plan on sipping it as you wander in the garden or sit on a lovely bench under a pergola where your coffee will taste even better.

The Demonstration Garden is a cooperative effort between McHenry County Community College and the Master Gardeners of McHenry County Extension office.

The garden is used as an outdoor teaching and learning area and showcases unusual and common plants, both native and nonnative, and will encourage gardeners of all ages and level of experience to grow their own gardens.

The Shade Garden is already popping with hostas and other shade-loving plants. In addition to the Shade garden, there is a Perennial Garden, a Rose Garden, Grasses, Native Plants, Vegetables, Vines, an eye-popping Lily Garden, colorful Annual Garden, Butterfly Garden - all in various stages of growth and beauty.

Every Saturday in June and July, two Master Gardeners will be on site from 9 a.m. to noon to answer your questions and show you around the "various gardens within the garden." Come often as each day the garden takes on a new dimension as spring bursts forth with summer not far behind. Don't forget your camera too!

For information or directions to the garden, call (815) 455-6872.
