St. Edward pounded out 17 hits and had a 9-run fourth inning Thursday in rolling over Harvard 17-3 in the semifinals of the Class 2A Driscoll baseball regional.
The Green Wave (16-12) will face Northridge Prep at 11 a.m. Saturday for the regional title. The Green Wave will be seeking their first regional title since 2005.
T.J. Madzy was the big stick for St. Edward in Thursday's win. He went 3-for-4 with 2 triples and 2 RBI. Anthony Bauer (2-for-3, 2 RBI), David Hoebbel (2-for-2, 3 runs), Jordan Torres (3-for-4, 2 doubles, 2 RBI), Julian Ramirez (3-run HR) and Jim Fraczek (3-for-3, 3 RBI) also contributed to the offense.
Fraczek was the winning pitcher, allowing 5 hits in 5 innings with 5 strikeouts.
"It was a big win for us to start the tournament," said St. Edward coach Gene Belmonte.
Sandwich 22, Hampshire 7: The Whip-Purs allowed 20 runs in the first three innings of this nonconference loss. James Goebbert was 2-for-2 with a double and 5 RBI for Hampshire (18-13) while Zach Crinigan and Tyler Bentley each had a double and an RBI.
Lake Park 17, Elgin 14: The Maroons (3-27, 3-22) came up short in their bid for a third straight win, falling in this Upstate Eight contest. Lee Jackson was 3-for-5 with 2 RBI for Elgin while Tom Roth went 3-for-3 with 4 RBI. Mike Stackowiak was Elgin's losing pitcher.
Streamwood 13, St. Charles East 7: Ryan Kiesel went 4-for-5 with 4 runs scored while Brian Brauer was 3-for-4 with a double and 4 RBI, Matt Korntved was 3-for-5 with 2 RBI and Dillon Noncek 2-for-3 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI as Streamwood won in the Upstate Eight. Tim Martin threw 5 innings for the win and Zach Klein finished in relief for the Sabres (18-13-2, 16-9).
Bartlett 9, Neuqua Valley 4: Bartlett bounced back to grab an Upstate Eight win from Neuqua as George Tintera and Erik Lira each went 2-for-4 with home runs and 2 RBI. Devin Rowland had a double and 3 RBI for the Hawks and Greg Partyka was 3-for-4. Alex VanNess (2-1) picked up the win for Bartlett.
Huntley 11, St. Francis 8: Carlos Alvarez (2b, 2 RBI), Matt Szytz (2B), Jordan Contreras (2B, 2 RBI), Phil Pupillo (2B0 and Craig Lipp each had 2 hits as Huntley (26-6-1) won in nonconference play. Chris Klein (2-1) was the winning pitcher for the Red Raiders.
South Elgin 10, St. Charles North 9: Drew Buddle had 3 hits including a double and 2 RBI as South Elgin (16-15-1, 13-10-1) closed out the regular season with an Upstate Eight win. Brett Huisman was the winning pitcher for the Storm.
Larkin 5, Waubonsie Valley 3: Justin Kalusa allowed just 1 hit over 5-plus innings as Larkin (19-16, 14-10) won in the Upstate Eight. Jon Meidel earned his third save of the season for the Royals. Carlos Rojo had a 2-run home run for Larkin while Luc Geier went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
