Learn about the joys of canoeing and kayaking

Test the waters, dip a paddle in the crystal clear waters of Lake Atwood and discover the joy of canoeing and kayaking at McHenry County Conservation District's "Paddle in the Park" from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30 at the Hollows Conservation Area, 3804 Route 14 in Cary.

"This event is great opportunity to test ride a canoe or kayak just for the fun of it or if you are thinking about buying one," said Andy Talley, education outreach coordinator for the district.

"Canoeing can open up a whole new recreational experience," said Wendy Kummerer, communications manager. "Whether it is for the athletic activity, sense of adventure when following a stream, or for the pure tranquility of being away from bumper to bumper traffic, canoeing guarantees individuals, families or groups a few hours of great outdoor fun."

Visitors can test their skills on the water in a canoe or kayak. Canoe paddling clinics will be offered at 10 a.m. and noon and kayak paddling clinics at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Visitors can also experience a paddle on a voyageur canoe with the Southwest Brigade. Chuck and Stacy Castellanos, historic interpreters, will demonstrate the importance of the canoe in early American settlement, exploration, and the fur trade industry.

In addition, local retailers will be on hand to discuss the different types of watercrafts available and which type might best suit you or your family's needs. A number of canoeing resources will be available such as information on where to paddle, where to get lessons, clubs to join, local outfitters and rentals, and details on local river trips and Midwest excursions.

Vendor booths include Illinois Paddling Council, Geneva Kayak Center, Paddle and Trail, Lake County Forest Preserve District, Tip-A-Canoe, Wisconsin River Outings, Stateline Paddlers, and Prairie State Canoeists.

"Gliding on top of the water, powered only by the stroke of your paddle, gives you a unique perspective on the natural world that can be an uplifting experience," said Tally. "We hope visitors are introduced to a new way to get outdoors and find all the resources they need to make that happen."
