Dundee-Crown inducts six into hall of fame

The Dundee-Crown High School Athletic Hall of Fame voted in six new members Wednesday night.

Howard Mitchell, Kelley Storm Larson, Jennifer Scarpelli Colby, Jim Rumsa, Kevin Tomasiewicz and David Silva will all be inducted during Hall of Fame weekend in September.

Mitchell, who will be inducted posthumously, is a 1932 Dundee graduate who was a two-time all-conference basketball player as well as an all-conference football player.

Storm Larson, a 1998 D-C graduate, earned a total of 11 varsity letters. She was a three-time all-conference basketball player and also all-conference one year in cross country. She scored over 1,000 points and was a three-time Daily Herald all-area player before going on to play at Quincy University, where she was inducted into that school's basketball hall of fame in 2002. She is currently a teacher at Quincy High School.

Scarpelli Colby is a 1982 Dundee alum, where she was a four-year varsity swimmer and team MVP all four years. She advanced to the IHSA state finals four straight years and was the first female swimmer from District 300 to score points at a state meet. She also excelled in track and was a two-time state qualifier. She earned a full scholarship to Purdue and competed in the Big Ten Track & Field Championships.

Rumsa is the well-known and longtime supporter of athletics who has been inducted into the media wing of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. A former basketball and baseball coach in the district, he also did play-by-play of Dundee and Crown games on local radio from 1967-1978. A charter member of the D-C Hall of Fame board of directors, he continues to be the public address announcer for D-C football games.

Tomasiewicz is a 2001 D-C graduate who was a co-captain of the Chargers' 2001 Elite Eight baseball team. He went on to set several pitching records at Wisconsin-Whitewater and was a member of that school's 2005 Division III national championship team. He was a two-time all-American and was drafted by the New York Mets. He spent four years pitching in the minor leagues.

Silva, a 2002 D-C grad, still holds the wrestling program's career record for wins and is one of only two wrestlers in the 31-year history of the Fox Valley Conference to win four straight conference titles. He was a three-time regional champ and three-time state qualifier, placing sixth in 2002. He went on to become a Division III all-American at Elmhurst College.

The inductees will be honored at D-C's Sept. 17 football game against Grayslake North and inducted at a dinner at Golf Club of Illinois on Dec. 19.
