Huntley bowling alley hosts fundraiser tonight

If you like to bowl, you should head to Bowl-Hi Lanes in Huntley tonight. The bowling alley at routes 47 and 62 is hosting a fundraiser for Team Cure or Bust, a group of Huntley women who are walking in the Breast Cancer 3-Day.

During the Breast Cancer 3-Day, thousands of local men and women walk through the northwest suburbs for three days to raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a nonprofit organization that supports breast cancer research.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure has raised more than $1 billion for breast cancer research since 1982, and the ladies of Team Cure or Bust aim to add $15,000 to that sum this year.

The women - Christy Nolte, Kim Bator, Nicki Fisher, Katie Erturk and Kelly Weadley - hope the Bowl-Hi fundraiser will bring them close to their fundraising goal.

Besides unlimited bowling, the fundraiser will also feature live entertainment, food and a silent auction. To find out more, call Christy Nolte at (847) 961-6579 or Bowl-Hi Lanes at (847) 669-5114.

Volunteers needed: The new Fiat Missionaries warehouse is up and running at routes 47 and 62 in Huntley.

The charity, which provides food, furniture and financial counseling to local families in need, delivers about 10 tons of food to suburban families each week, according to Roger Klein, who heads the outfit.

Klein is seeking more volunteers to pick up donations and disburse them throughout the suburbs. If you're interested, call (773) 443-7355.

Step it up: Jacobs High School students often impress me with their accomplishments outside the classroom - whether on the field, on the stage or in the community.

Excellence has become almost routine for the Jacobs Varsity Dance Team. This year, the team captured its sixth straight state title in hip hop dance.

Community Unit District 300 recognized the team and Coach Kristen Semrich at Monday's school board meeting.

Superintendent Ken Arndt presented the team with a plaque for their achievements, saying the usual certificate was not enough for the occasion.

Board vet departs: District 300 also recognized departing board member Mary Warren. After eight years on the board, Warren, a teacher, decided not to seek re-election to focus on earning her National Board Certification.

Warren is the only current board member who will not be on the board next month, as the other two incumbents whose terms expire this year - Karen Roeckner and Anne Miller - won re-election last week.

Warren's board colleagues praised her for the institutional knowledge she brought from years of volunteering in the district. They also said that while they may not have always agreed with her, they were always able to disagree respectfully.

Arndt presented Warren with a Cross pen and a globe that rotates on its base in response to light.
