Holiday programs abound at Schaumburg Township District Library
December brings an art show, concert and variety of holiday programs to the Schaumburg Township District Library (STDL), 130 S. Roselle Rd., Schaumburg.
Artwork by Schaumburg High School students will be on display at STDL throughout December. The display areas in the New Books and Fiction area and main lobby will be filled with hundreds of impressive 2D and 3D pieces by talented art students. A reception and award ceremony will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, in the fireplace area. All are welcome to attend.
December is full of holidays which, in many homes, means it is time to bake. Enjoy a nostalgic night of tales, treats and recipes in "Classic Cookies from Decades Past" from 7:30-9 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 1, in the Rasmussen South Room. Hosted by Teen Librarian and vintage cookbook collector Amy Alessio, this program will highlight popular cookies from 1940 through 1980, evoking delicious memories from many cultures. For those planning to entertain in the months to come, Chef Lou Buchenot will provide tasty cooking demonstrations in "Appetizers and Hors d'Oeuvres" from 7:30-9 p.m., Monday, Dec. 7, in the Rasmussen South Room. Learn to make appetizers for a variety of holiday events. Tasting and recipes included.
Need an original gift or new decoration? The two-part "Holiday Ceramics" workshop will be held from 7-9:30 p.m., Wednesdays, Dec. 9 and 16, in the Craft Room. Instructor Randy Skepnek will teach participants how to complete a festive ceramic piece. A $15 fee is required for this class.
Learn to make a lovely and fresh table decoration in "Holiday Centerpiece" taught by Peggy Garvin of Garvin Gardens. This workshop will be offered twice at different locations and times. The first is slated from 1-2:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Hoffman Estates Branch, 1550 Hassell Road, while the second takes place from 7-8:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 10, in the central library's Craft Room. Participants will make a centerpiece using fresh greens, glass balls, ribbons and a candle. A $15 fee is required for supplies.
Holiday music will fill the library's Audiovisual department as the Random Ringers present a handbell concert at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 14, in the Audiovisual Theater. These talented musicians will perform secular, popular and religious pieces on handbells and chimes.
Does anxiety build up as the holidays approach? Come to "Reducing Holiday Stress" from 7:30-9 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 15, in the Rasmussen South Room. This program is designed for those feeling the pressure of too many commitments, too much to do and too little money. Olivia Shelkey of Mentors for Changes will provide simple, inexpensive strategies to help people feel relaxed and energized.
