Huntley gets back at D-C; Rockets gain their 1st win
Dundee-Crown handed Huntley one of its 3 losses last season. When the teams met again in Carpentersville, the Red Raiders were determined to get that game back. They wasted little time, scoring 3 times in the first 20 minutes and holding on for a 5-2 girls soccer victory.
Corinne Wronski scored 2 goals, and Taylor Henning, Aimee Wronski and Kristina Barreto also scored for Huntley (5-0), while Kaylee O'Brien had a pair of assists.
Katie Dunning and Licia Keyes scored for the Chargers (0-1-1).
"We lost 3 games (last year) and one was to D-C, and it was big for the girls to get that game back," said Huntley coach Kris Grabner. "I think they came out with those nerves, but settled in toward the end."
First-year D-C coach Sebastian Falinski doesn't know what happened last year and doesn't much care.
"We're just going to focus on us and what we need to do to get better," he said.
"From what I've heard, Huntley has shut out every team so far and we were able to get 2 on them, so that shows some potential."
Barreto's dominant play in the midfield was one of the keys for Huntley.
"That was one of the biggest turning points, the way she played in the second half," said Grabner.
Goals by Henning, Corinne Wronski and Aimee Wronski gave Huntley an early 3-0 lead. Aimee Wronski's goal came on a breakaway set up by Samantha Zobott.
The Chargers got one back on Dunning's free kick. She curled the ball around the defensive wall and into the net.
"That was one of the best dead ball shots I've seen since I've been coaching," said Grabner.
Barreto and Corinne Wronski scored early in the second half to give the Red Raiders a commanding lead. Barreto scored on a shot on the ground from about 10 yards out into the far left side of the net. Six minutes later, Wronski scored after a long run, firing a hard shot in the air and into almost the same spot in the net as Barreto.
But the Chargers didn't give up. Less than a minute after Wronski's goal made it 5-1, the Chargers struck again when Keyes tapped in the rebound of a free kick by Clare Mazurkiewicz.
