D-155 swimmers topple D-C/Jacobs
There was something in the water Wednesday night at the Dundee Township Park District pool as long-time rivals District 155 and the Dundee-Crown/Jacobs co-op faced off.
For District 155, that something consisted of Michael Kinross and Brent Curtis, who combined to win four individual events helping the co-op to its first victory over D-C/Jacobs since January of 2003.
When all was said and done, District 155 improved to 3-0 in dual meets with the 102-68 win.
"This group is really starting to come around," said D-155 coach Jim Andriakos.
"This was a big win for us. They (D-C/Jacobs) have beaten us for years."
Kinross recorded his firsts in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly.
Finishing the 200 IM at 2:20.4, Kinross jumped out to an early lead and won by nearly half a pool length in the end. D-C/Jacobs' Nick Pankau was next finishing at 2:29.5.
"Nick is working real hard in practice," said D-C/Jacobs coach Rick Andresen. "He's doing a great job for us."
Kinross had to earn it in the 100 butterfly just etching out Sean Kelly of D-C/Jacobs.
"Michael had just an outstanding meet for us," said Andriakos. "He swam really, really well tonight."
Curtis recorded firsts for D-155 in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke at 1:01.7 and 1:10.0 respectively.
Additional team leaders for District 155 included Christian Weber, Ryan Kearney and Edward Griswold, who combined to complete the sweep in freestyle events.
Kearney won the 200 free with a time of 2:12.52, while Griswold took the 500 free riding an early lead all the way through to finish at 4:37.75 ahead of D-C/Jacobs' Riley Quinlan (4:57.99).
The 50 free went to both teams as freshman Ryan Krug of Dundee-Crown/Jacobs and Christian Weber of D-155 touched the wall together at 26.95.
"We are very pleased with Ryan Krug," said Andrensen. "As a freshman, he is doing extremely well for us."
Dundee-Crown/Jacobs took two of three relays tallying a first in the 400 behind Dan Geske, Kelly, Krug and Pankau, who finished with a time of 3:59.30. D-C/Jacobs' Bryan Kosel, Krug, Alec Schmidt and Kelly combined for a 1:58.11 to narrowly defeat D-155's 1:58.76 (Weber, Griswold, Kinross, Henquinet) in the 200 medley relay.
In addition to competing on both relay teams, Kelly won the 100 backstroke with a 1:03.83 for D-C/Jacobs.
"Sean is swimming very well," said Andresen. "His backstroke is great and his butterfly continues to improve."
Andriakos agrees.
"Sean has been just phenomenal for them," Andriakos echoed.
District 155 won the 200 free relay behind Jonathan Kalenda, Weber, Curtis and Kearney at 1:47.38.
Now 6-0 overall including three invitational titles, Andriakos is ready for the big test.
"We are right where we want to be at this time in the season," he said. "We'll see how good we really are this weekend when we travel out to Jefferson to compete amongst 14 other teams.
"Tonight, we are happy to come away with the win."
Dundee-Crown/Jacobs is taking some lumps as it endures growing pains, but continues to roster some strong talent.
"We are having some communication problems, but I am pleased with several of our swimmers," said Andresen. "Alex Schmidt is doing a nice job for us and Riley Quinlan has done an excellent job with distance.
"District 155 looked real strong. They did a great job."
