Schmit: Who had the area’s top prep football performances of Week 2?

It was bounceback week for many of the area’s prep football teams. For their respective players, too.

Other teams, meanwhile, marched their way to 2-0 records. The High Five eyes them all, looking back at last weekend’s games to honor the top performances of Week 2.

5. Matthew Kaput, RB-LB, Buffalo Grove

The Bison improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2021 with a 41-20 victory over Deerfield behind their powerful senior running back.

Kaput, 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, rushed for 205 of his team’s 229 rushing yards on 22 of Buffalo Grove’s 32 total carries. He scored on runs of six, two and two yards.

On defense, Kaput notched 11 tackles including three solos and a sack.

4. Ryan Chrusciel, K-P, Wheaton North

This is a wild choice for the High Five.

The senior used some fancy footwork to keep Stevenson on its heels in a 31-13 victory for the Falcons. Chrusciel booted a pooch kick that the Patriots fumbled, converting the miscue with a 26-yard field goal and a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

But that was just the beginning. Chrusciel launched pooch kicks his next three times on the tee, and Stevenson fumbled all three. Wheaton North recovered two of them and built a 31-0 halftime lead.

Chrusciel punted once for 39 yards and was perfect on four extra-point attempts.

3. Will Clark, QB, Fremd

Two weeks into the season, it’s clear the quarterback position remains in good hands at Fremd.

The Vikings are 2-0 again after a 35-21 win over Glenbrook South that showcased the up-and-coming arm of Clark, a 6-foot, 165-pound junior. Clark completed 19 of 27 passes for 341 and touchdowns of 55 and 18 yards. He also rushed for 72 yards including a 59-yard scoring run.

Senior receiver Carter McDonald was Clark’s top target. He snared eight catches for 191 yards and both touchdowns.

2. Luke Harvey, RB, Rolling Meadows

With Harvey leading the way, Rolling Meadows rallied from a 14-3 deficit to beat Schaumburg 33-22.

The 6-foot, 190-pound senior rushed for 140 of his 266 yards in the first half, scoring four times among his 35 overall carries.

Harvey’s touchdown runs of 19 and 14 yards lifted the Mustangs to a 19-14 halftime lead. He added scores of 11 and 24 yards.

1. Jalen Callaway, RB-DL, Aurora Christian

Make it eight touchdowns on the season and counting for Callaway, who scored five in a 49-0 victory over Elgin.

Most of the damage was done on the ground by the 6-foot, 185-pound junior, who carried the ball six times for 133 yards and three touchdowns. He added two receptions for 54 yards and a fourth score.

Callaway also played a strong game on defense. He made five tackles, including two for loss and recovered a fumble. He returned an interception 76 yards for a touchdown that boosted Aurora Christian’s lead to 35-0.
