Dining out: Free Nando’s, National Ice Cream Day, restaurant anniversaries and more
Nando’s Pantry Raid
Nando’s PERi-PERi will honor its South African roots on Friday by celebrating International Mandela Day with Nando’s Pantry Raid — offering free chicken and fries for customers who bring in a nonperishable food donation.
The giveaway runs from 3-6 p.m. Friday, July 18, at all Nando’s locations. Guests who bring a nonperishable food item will receive a free quarter chicken and PERi Chips. Nando’s will send donations to local chapters of the United Way.
No purchase is necessary. The offer is one per guest, while supplies last. Suburban Nando’s are in Naperville, Oak Brook and Skokie.
International Nelson Mandela Day honors the birthday of South African leader Nelson Mandela, who fought for equality and an end to apartheid. The Mandela Day Initiative was created to inspire others to take action every July 18.
National Ice Cream Day
Oberweis Dairy is celebrating National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, July 20, by donating a portion of sales that day to local charities as part of their Scoops of Hope campaign.
Oberweis will also be opening their first new location in five years — and the first under the new ownership of the Hoffman Family of Companies — later this month in Winnetka. A ribbon cutting is tentatively planned for July 30.
Over at The Original Rainbow Cone, they’ll be giving away free Rainbow Cones for a year to one lucky winner at each location. Anyone who visits a store and joins Rainbow Rewards will be automatically entered to win, and one winner will be randomly selected from each Rainbow Cone location Sunday.
Christmas in July
The warmth of the holidays will meet the warmth of the summer during a Christmas in July brunch Sunday, July 20, at Lucille Restaurant at Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace.
There’ll be festive decorations, holiday music, complimentary family photos, an extravagant holiday champagne feast and a chance to meet Santa. It’s $80 for adults and $30 for kids 5-12. Reservations are available at OpenTable.
