Dining out: Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, National Pierogi Day and more
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, some local restaurants are encouraging you to eat and drink pink to support research to help end the disease. Also, Tuesday, Oct. 8, is National Pierogi Day, so we’ve got some places you can grab those tasty pillows of goodness, and bingo is getting a lot cooler in Oak Brook.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States, aside from skin cancers, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It’s also the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the U.S.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and restaurants around the suburbs are offering specials to raise money for research, education, awareness and support for those battling the disease.
Antico Posto, 118 Oakbrook Center, Oak Brook, is serving up a tasty dessert to support the cause. One dollar from the sale of each Strawberry Cheesecake Gelato will go to Chicago’s In Good Taste, the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Foundation’s research initiative.
Beatrix, 272 Oakbrook Center, Oak Brook, will donate $1 from each Strawberry Jammers Cookie to Chicago’s In Good Taste.
Enjoy a strawberry milkshake from Bub City, 5441 Park Place, Rosemont, and $1 from every sale will be donated to The Pink Agenda.
The new Ema, 1320 Patriot Blvd., Glenview, is offering Akakies Sparkling Rosé, with $1 from each glass or $5 from each bottle sold benefiting Chicago’s In Good Taste.
At The Hampton Social, 100 W. Higgins Road, South Barrington, a portion of proceeds from sales of “The Fighter” cocktail in October will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The cocktail starts with your choice of vodka or tequila and is made with Passoa, blueberry, vanilla and lemon juice.
Roka Akor, 166 Oakbrook Center, Oak Brook, is supporting Editha House, which provides affordable lodging for adult cancer patients and their caregivers traveling for medical treatment. When you drink pink and enjoy their Argyle brut rose, they’ll donate $5 per glass or $20 per bottle to Editha House. Or you can dine and donate by ordering the hamachi serrano chili roll and they’ll donate $3.
Truluck's, 9860 Berwyn Ave., Rosemont, is again partnering with J. Lohr Vineyards and Wines for their Pouring with Purpose campaign in October. They'll donate $20 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s breast cancer education and early detection programs for each bottle of J. Lohr Carol’s Vineyard cabernet sauvignon sold while dining in.
National Pierogi Day
In case it’s not already circled on your calendar, Tuesday, Oct. 8, is National Pierogi Day. And the suburbs have some great eateries where you can celebrate.
When it comes to recommendations, we have to start with the eatery you chose as the Daily Herald Reader’s Choice for favorite Polish restaurant, Tata’s Pierogi in Elk Grove Village. The family-owned eatery specializes in pierogi, with a variety of savory and sweet dumplings from which to choose, including some rarer options you won’t find many places.
Other great suburban spots to get your pierogi fix include Bacowka Restaurant in Schaumburg, Polish & American Bistro in Barrington, Qulinarnia in Mt. Prospect and Red Poppy Bistro in South Elgin.
Be a boom box hero
Bingo night is getting a whole lot groovier at the Hearth Lounge in the Hyatt Lodge Oak Brook. Boombox Bingo combines music with a fun, party atmosphere and, of course, bingo. Put your musical knowledge to the test and mark off songs instead of numbers while enjoying craft cocktails, beer, wine and a bar bites menu. The event series is hosted by Geeks Who Drink and happens from 6-8 p.m. every Wednesday.
Support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
Mod Pizza is partnering with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to help kids with blood cancer. Leukemia is the most common cancer among children, accounting for about 30% of childhood cancers. Mod’s Maddy cheese pizza is named after a young guest who died from the disease.
From now until Oct. 31, kids eat free on Sundays at Mod. Throughout the month, guests can round up their bills or donate directly to LLS at any Mod location to support the Dare to Dream Project, which works to change the paradigm of treatment and care for pediatric blood cancer patients with safer, less toxic treatments and access to free support and resources for kids and their families.
