Oct. 6

Fall Festival & Bulb Sale: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, at Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake-Cook Road, Glencoe. The 2024 festival is anchored by the Fall Bulb Sale in the Regenstein Center. Shop for more than 200 varieties of bulbs. Choose from a wide variety of daffodils, tulips, alliums and other specialty bulbs. The bulbs are shipped directly from Holland, just in time for fall planting. The Fall Bulb Sale will also offer hyacinths, peonies, and amaryllis, as well as “Bulb Boost” bulb fertilizer. The Fall Festival offers sweet treats, music, and fun for kids of all ages. The straw bale maze and the gourd mountain ensure that everyone can find a way to celebrate the season. Garden Club of Mount Prospect — Houseplants: 9:30 a.m. social time; 10 a.m. business meeting; 11 a.m. speaker, Tuesday, Oct. 8, in the Farley Room at Mount Prospect Village Hall, 50 S. Emerson St., Mount Prospect. Lisa Hilgenberg, the Regenstein Fruit and Vegetable Garden horticulturist at Chicago Botanic Garden, will present, “Houseplants are Hip.” Join and learn about houseplant trends and the best foliage and flowering plants for low, medium or bright light. Rolling Meadows Garden Club — ‘Gardening for Life’: 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Rolling Meadows Community Center, 3705 Pheasant Drive, Rolling Meadows. Our home gardens have the potential to benefit the larger ecosystem while providing year-round beauty. The presentation, “Gardening for Life,” will introduce some ideas from permaculture to help incorporate native plants for biodiversity, manage stormwater, save energy, and more. The guest speaker, Judy Speer, promotes healthy ecosystems by teaching ecological restoration and permaculture with Small Waters Education, a nonprofit organization based in Northern Illinois. Schaumburg Community Garden Club — Post Harvest: 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg. “Post Harvest Activities for a Productive Garden Next Year” will be presented by Mark Lyon. Lyon has been an avid vegetable gardener ever since childhood. Park Ridge Garden Club — Birds in the Garden: 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at Centennial Activity Center, 100 S. Western Ave., Park Ridge. Cohen Burman presents, “Turn Your Garden Into the Perfect B&B for Birds.” The right balance of food, feeders, water and shelter will entice a variety of birds to your yard. The discussion includes location for birdscape design, food, hygiene, squirrel prevention and identifying the common birds at your feeder in winter. Gardeners of Central Lake County — Composting: 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, at CrossLife Evangelical Free Church. 431 W. Austin Ave., Libertyville. This presentation by the University of Illinois Extension, Lake County, covers a broad overview to get you started with outdoor composting and to help you address issues if you are already composting. Focusing on the home gardener, a wide range of topics will be addressed including the benefits of composting, the science of composting, the options you have to create compost and the uses of compost. Des Plaines Garden Club — Fall Luncheon: 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at Manzo’s Banquets, 1571 Elmhurst Road, Des Plaines. Peggy Garvin from Horticulture by Garvin Gardens will present, “Fall and Holiday Flower Arrangements.” A choice of two entries is available for lunch. There will be a raffle, an instant win board, a silent auction and a bake sale. There will also be a 50/50 raffle with proceeds going to the club's Scholarship Fund. The cost is $45 per person. Garden Club of Inverness — Holiday Luncheon: On Thursday, Dec. 5, the Garden Club of Inverness will be hosting its annual holiday luncheon at Medinah Country Club with the theme “Sleigh Bells Ring.” The event will feature a silent auction, Christmas crafts, and a raffle in addition to a presentation on floral arrangements for the holidays.
