Happy New Year! Suburban restaurants ready to help diners celebrate Rosh Hashanah

For those who celebrate Rosh Hashanah, now is the time to make plans to gather your family and friends together for a festive meal for the Jewish New Year holiday, which starts at sundown Wednesday, Oct. 2. Suburban restaurants are offering a number of dine in and to-go specials for your celebration.

Di Pescara

Di Pescara is offering a special family-style Rosh Hashanah menu that includes a multiple-course meal with traditional dishes like beef chopped liver, gefilte fish, brisket and whitefish for $59.95 and $29.95 for kids 5-10. The dine-in special is available from 4:45-8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 2-3. The menu is also available for carryout for family-style meals for $59.95 per person. Carryout orders, which must be placed by Friday, Sept. 27, are packed cold with reheating instructions and will be ready for pickup from noon to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 2-3.

Grill House offers a special Rosh Hashanah catering menu to help make life a little easier, especially if you're feeding a group. Options include apps (hummus platter, matzo balls, challah bread), salads, entrées (braised brisket, panko-crusted whitefish, roasted chicken, grilled Atlantic salmon), sides (potato latkes, green bean almondine, oven-roasted potatoes, roasted vegetables) and more.

Gather family and friends to celebrate Rosh Hashanah from 4 p.m. to close Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 2-3, with a family-style meal starting with apples and honey, Suzy Friedman’s vegetarian chopped liver, housemade chopped liver, gefilte fish, matzoh ball soup, honey-glazed carrots, green beans, wild rice and lentil pilaf and potato pancakes. Choose from entrees that include rosemary-brown butter chicken, potato-crusted Lake Superior whitefish or beef brisket. End with a sweet treat of gooey chocolate cake or caramel apple cheesecake. It’s $51.95. Reservations are requested. The meal is available to-go; orders must be placed by 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, for pickup or delivery between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Wednesday or Thursday, Oct. 2-3.

Max and Benny’s makes Rosh Hashanah easy with catered holiday packages to-go featuring a choice of sweet and sour meatballs or chopped liver; an entree of lean brisket, roasted half chicken or a combo, plus matzo balls, vegetable medley, oven-brown potatoes and round holiday challah. Packages for four cost $129 and for eight cost $229. Or choose from a variety of dishes and sides à la carte. Order by Sunday, Sept. 29.

Make plans now to dine in on Rosh Hashanah with Max’s special holiday dinner, which is $38 for adults and $19 for kids. It features a choice of slow-roasted brisket, baked Amish chicken, matzo-crusted Door County whitefish, grilled North Atlantic salmon, sweet and sour meatballs or Israeli couscous with grilled asparagus. Also included with the meal are chopped liver, matzo ball soup, gefilte, latke and sesame roasted veggies.

Prairie Grass will be open for Rosh Hashanah dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 2, for holiday parties, but call for reservations. If you’re planning to celebrate at home, Prairie Grass is offering a Rosh Hashanah Takeout Package for Two for $118. It includes a mixed green salad, slow-braised all-natural barbecue brisket, roasted cauliflower and sticky toffee date cake. Add on sides such as chicken noodle soup ($20), chopped chicken liver ($12), tzimmes ($16) and honey-glazed carrots ($16). Call to place your order by Monday, Sept. 30, for pickup between 4 and 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3.

The à la carte menu will be available for dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 2, and all day on Thursday, Oct. 3. Rosh Hashanah dishes will be available as platters for carryout as well.
