A pair of ducks, one partially submerged forage for food just above the dam Wednesday, November 22, 2023 in Carpentersville. Ducks are natural foragers and are able to find plenty of tasty food on their own. Their diet may include worms, slugs, roots, frogs, insects, snails, fish, plants, crustaceans, and more. Ducks fall into one of two categories: dabbling or diving. Dabblers mostly eat in shallow waters, dipping their heads underneath to reach prey below. Divers eat in deeper waters and like their name, dive underneath for food. The size and shape of a duck's beak determines how he finds food. Brian Hill/bhill@dailyherald.com
