A moving tribute by the son of Holocaust survivors to his parents, "Not a Real Enemy" tells the true story of Ervin Wolf and his family as the fascist tide of Eastern Europe took hold of Hungary. The book weaves together a narrative that illustrates the Wolf family's comfortable upper-class life as Hungarian Jews at the turn of the 20th century, into the turmoil of World War II, and through the death camp of Auschwitz Birkenau, where Wolf lost his parents. Marc Chagall - Fiddling Between Two Worlds: Held hybrid at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, at North Shore Senior Center, 161 Northfield Road, Northfield. Known for his iconic paintings of "The Fiddler" (1913), Marc Chagall was a brilliant crossover artist. He took Jewish folkloric themes and depicted them in paintings, puppetry, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, and other forms of art. His works became beloved by a large worldwide audience, and yet darkness and an ongoing sense of fragmentation was always present. 'The Girl in the Diary': Runs through Sept. 24, at Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center, 9603 Woods Drive, Skokie. "The Girl in the Diary: Searching for Rywka from the Łódz Ghetto," explores a young girl's fight for survival and the search for what happened to her after the Holocaust. Discovered in the ashes of a destroyed crematorium at Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, the diary of 14-year-old Rywka Lipszyc documented her life in the Łódz ghetto between October 1943 and April 1944.
