Almost Home Foundation partners with Dog Is My CoPilot and Petco Love to save dogs at risk for euthanasia
Almost Home Foundation (AHF), of Schaumburg, an all-volunteer, registered, not-for-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization dedicated to rescuing stray, neglected, abused, and abandoned cats and dogs, is partnering with Dog Is My CoPilot, Inc., sponsored by Petco Love, to rescue dogs from an overcrowded facility in Texas where they are at high risk for euthanasia.
The rescue flight will depart from Athens, Texas, on Monday, August 28. A volunteer piloting a Cessna plane will make stops in Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin, where 31 dogs will be transferred to rescues. AHF will be ready and waiting at Dupage County Airport in West Chicago for the 15 mixed breed dogs it is taking in. The dogs range in age from three months old to two years old and in weight from 15 lbs. to 52 lbs.
"We are so excited about this new partnership and cannot wait to help these dogs begin their new lives," says Jackie Guglielmo, Canine Director of Almost Home Foundation.
An average Dog Is My CoPilot rescue flight carries around 75 animals, and there are over 70 flights every year. To date, 29,000 shelter animals have been flown to rescues.
"We believe that collaboration is key to saving more lives and are humbled by the hard work that our shelter partners do every day for the animals in their care," said Peter Rork, M.D., Chief Pilot and President of DIMC. "This rescue effort is a model for partnership and we hope it will inspire more people to work together for the greater good of our animal friends. These dogs think we're saving them but at the end of the day, they save us. They give us the chance to do good and help, to live with a greater purpose than ourselves."
Since it was founded in 2005, Almost Home Foundation has rescued dogs from all over the country. Many of its rescues come from rural areas where shelters are constantly in crisis mode. Although AHF has a small facility for temporarily housing cats and dogs without foster homes, the facility is near capacity after a recent intake of dogs from a hoarding situation. Foster and foster-to-adopt homes are desperately needed. Please visit www.almosthomefoundation.org to learn more about AHF, and please consider fostering, adopting, volunteering, or donating!
If you have questions about providing a foster or foster-to-adopt home for one of the incoming rescue flight dogs or one of AHF's current facility residents, please email fosteradog@almosthomefoundation.org. Foster homes are absolutely essential to AHF's mission, and AHF couldn't rescue and responsibly rehome over a thousand animals every year without them.
