NSYMCA gymnasts wrap up season at state tourney

The North Suburban YMCA's gymnastics team closed out its 2023 season at the Illinois XCEL State Championship meet in Rockford. Sixteen gymnasts on the team qualified to compete in the state meet, and two qualified for the XCEL Regional meet.

The team shined bright by winning numerous medals, and gymnasts Emilia Marvel and Amanda Fielding qualified for the Region 5 Championship. In addition, Avery Radin placed fourth overall on bars; Fielding placed seventh on vault, floor and all around, as well as ninth on bars. Additionally, Emma Kharab placed seventh on floor and was the 2022-23 Excel Bronze Senior A Beam State Champion.

Throughout the 2022-23 season, the gymnasts placed in many competitions. The Silver Team took home a third-place trophy and the Bronze Team placed third at their first meet of the season.

The NSYMCA gymnastics team brought home two event championship medals, as well as one all-around age group championship. The team had 126 top 10 placements at competitions, resulting in 60 medals, 12 fifth-place medals, 3 third-place medals and 6 second-place medals.

"It was amazing to have so many girls qualify for state and all the gymnasts put their hearts into this year's competition, giving us a good showing from all those who competed at state," said Jordan Levy, NSYMCA head gymnastics coach. "Even with over 70% of the team being first-year competitors, the team absolutely crushed it this year.

"The girls more than just represented the Y this year, but they put the Y on the map and we're looking forward to proving exactly what we're capable of next season," Levy said.

The North Suburban YMCA offers gymnastics for preschool, recreational, and competitive gymnastics instruction with the opportunity to participate in statewide competitions as part of the NSYMCA team. Through positive, learning-based curriculum and coaching practices, the NSYMCA competitive gymnastics program creates an opportunity for gymnasts to grow and succeed in and out of the gym.
