Artist Series presents 'What's More American Than Broadway' with Mark Olen
On Sunday, July 2, the talented Mark Olen and his Stars and Stripes Orchestra will present a festive evening of "What's More American Than Broadway" during a free concert at Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church in Huntley. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. at the church, 10805 Main St.
No tickets are required for this performance and freewill donations are gratefully accepted. Bring the family to experience this entertaining tribute of patriotic and Broadway musical favorites.
Sponsored by the SOTP Artist Series, Mark Olen and his Stars and Stripes Orchestra will be joined by renowned Chicago-based jazz vocalists Paul Marinaro and Alyssa Allgood.
"We are pleased to once again welcome Mark Olen to share his talents and perform for our community during this year's July patriotic concert," said Jane McMullen, Artist Series chairman at Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church.
"Mark and his trumpet are no strangers to Shepherd of the Prairie. He has become one of our most popular musician and has performed during previous Artist Series programs, including last year's 'An American Musical Celebration,' as well as numerous church services."
Trumpeter Olen's versatility is evidenced by performances with the American Jazz Philharmonic, Chicago Jazz Festival, Ravinia Festival Orchestra, to name just a few. He has performed with a multitude of entertainers, including Tony Bennett, Michael McDonald, Al Jarreau, Aretha Franklin, Maynard Ferguson, and David Foster. As a studio artist, Olen has contributed to recordings of the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, VeggieTales, and countless television/radio commercials.
Marinaro has been dubbed as having "one of the most beautiful vocal instruments in the business today" by the Chicago Tribune. Since 2016, he has grown in national visibility and acclaim and has enjoyed highly regarded debuts across the U.S. and Canada. He has appeared at Toronto's Jazz Bistro, and most notably at the world-famous Birdland Jazz Club in New York, where he performed to sold-out crowds. With Chicago as his home base, Paul has become one of the most in-demand and respected male vocalists and has "taken his place among the top five male jazz singers active today.
Allgood has been described as "assured and daring" by DownBeat Magazine and a "model of sophisticated song interpretation" by the Chicago Tribune. She brings a modern flair to the jazz tradition with her infectious swing feel and lyricism.
