Warrenville Girl Scout Troop 50239 collects over 3,000 lbs. of food

The Silver Award is the highest award that a Cadette Girl Scout (grades 6-8) can earn, and it's given to troops who develop a project that creates a positive, sustainable change in their local community.

In pursuit of their Silver Award, Warrenville Girl Scout Troop 50239 joined forces with a local food pantry to revive a door-to-door food drive that had begun prior to COVID-19 and set off to make a difference.

From researching the local food pantry to visiting local stores and asking for paper bag donations, the Girl Scout troop put their plan into action with the help of another local Junior Troop.

On Friday, April 14, the troops hung over 1,100 paper bags on front doors with a request to fill the bag with items to be donated to Immanuel Presbyterian Food Pantry.

Despite poor weather conditions, the troops collected the bags on Sunday afternoon - and the local community did not disappoint.

Filling eight cars full of non-perishable food items, the troops spent the day weighing, sorting, checking expiration dates and stocking a total of 3,005 pounds of food, surpassing the troop's goal by 300%.

The success of Girl Scout Troop 50239's project not only gets them one step closer to earning their Silver Award but more importantly has provided the Warrenville community with a huge donation and the idea to keep the door-to-door food drive a permanent tradition.
