DuPage Medical Society Foundation announces 2022 scholarship and grant awards
The DuPage Medical Society Foundation board of trustees announces the awarding of 12 student scholarships for 2022.
Christine Fasana, Bloomingdale, is the 2022 recipient of the prestigious James P. Campbell, MD, Memorial Scholarship. Christine begins her medical school studies at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville this fall. Successful in laboratory research as an undergraduate research fellow, a medical ethics class focused on the social determinants of health informed her conviction to pursue a medical degree.
The James P. Campbell, MD, Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 to honor the memory of a distinguished DuPage County physician who for 60 years was also a great advocate for organized medicine. He served the DuPage County Medical Society (DCMS) and other branches of organized medicine in many ways, but most significantly as the Society's secretary treasurer for 29 years. Recipients of the James P. Campbell, MD, Memorial Scholarship must exhibit an outstanding academic background and extraordinary potential for a future in medicine.
Nishanth Sadagopan, Darien, is awarded the 2022 William B. Frymark, Sr., MD, Honorary Scholarship. Nishanth is going into his first year of medical school at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine. He impressed not only with his academic record but his great empathy for others. Interested in pursuing oncology, he understands that healing is more than treating an illness.
Nishanth wrote "Even though my family faced our own struggles when my father was diagnosed with a brain tumor, we had good medical insurance that paid for my father's screening, pre-operation, post-operation, and radiation therapy. Most of the patients I met never even had the opportunity to receive screening, let alone treatment. The practice of healing should be at the forefront of every physician's career - but healing is not limited to addressing the physical ailments of patients. The duty of a physician is to identify gaps within their community and to bring holistic care to the underserved."
It is this thinking that made him an obvious choice for the William B. Frymark, Sr., MD, Honorary Scholarship.
The William B. Frymark, Sr., MD, Honorary Scholarship is a tribute to one of the Foundation's founders who, in the ensuing half century, remained a dedicated supporter and steward of the organization. Doctor Frymark served many terms as a trustee and president of the Foundation's Board. He also held many leadership positions with the DuPage County Medical Society. Recipients of the William B. Frymark, MD, Honorary Scholarship demonstrate superior academic ability, a commitment to service, and great potential as a healthcare service provider.
