Nicor Gas offers tips and tools to help customers turn down the heat this summer

With high temperatures and humidity kicking off this summer, the Nicor Gas Energy Efficiency Program is providing energy-saving tips to help customers keep their cool while saving money and energy.

During the summer months, water is one of the elements that we tend to use more of as we take more shower, hydrate more from the tap, and tend to our gardens and lawns. This also means that we use more natural gas, and here are some tips to help customers minimize their use while still enjoying all of those activities and more year round:

• Shorten your showers. Lowering the time you spend in the shower can save water and heating! Belt out five minutes worth of your favorite songs and see the difference in your bills.

•Reuse water from washing fruits and veggies. Instead of watching water go down the drain after you rinse off those garden fruits and veggies, capture it and reuse it. The next time you want to make some pasta or water your garden, you'll have water available.

• Install high-efficiency showerheads and faucet aerators. You can save gallons of water every year without giving up comfort or water pressure by installing high-efficiency showerheads and faucet aerators.

• Insulate your water pipes. By insulating your water heater pipes, you can reduce energy loss. As the water travels, the temperature should be more consistent and will deliver hot water faster throughout your system.

• Turn off water when brushing your teeth. While you're brushing, make sure to turn the water off. Even if it's a small amount of time, it can make a big difference in your water savings.

• Schedule a free home assessment. Customers can get free high-efficiency showerheads, faucet aerators, pipe insulation and more by scheduling either a virtual or in-person home assessment. One of our energy advisors can help you maximize your energy-saving opportunities and either install free products or ship them to your home.
