MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVANCES
Deerfield ceremony: 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial in the Jewett Park Community Center parking lot, 836 Jewett Park Drive. The ceremony will include traditional elements such as tributes by the Deerfield Sons of the American Legion, Deerfield scout troops, and Deerfield High School Marching Band all supported by Deerfield Police, Fire, and Public Works Departments. Following brief remarks, the ceremony will proceed to the Deerfield Cemetery for a reading of the names of those buried there who served their country. Afterward, the American Legion will host the community for an open house at the post, 849 Waukegan Road.
Glenview parade: 10 a.m. Steps off at Depot and Grove streets, heads east to Pine, south on Glenview Road and east to the Veterans Memorial at River Drive, where a ceremony will take place with remarks and singing of the national anthem and God Bless America.
Highland Park observance: 11 a.m. at Highland Park High School auditorium, 444 Vine Ave. (entrance on St. Johns Avenue). Live, in-person observance with representatives from local veterans groups, Mayor Nancy Rotering and other special guests. The Highland Park High School band will perform.
Northbrook parade: 10:30 a.m. Northbrook American Legion Post 791 hosts its annual Memorial Day parade, which has a new route this year. It steps off at Western Avenue and Cherry Lane, turns right onto Meadow Road, left onto Shermer Road and continues to Village Green Park. The parade will feature veterans, first responders, essential workers, and local school bands. Afterward, activities include singing the national anthem, a welcome from Post 791's Commander, and guest speaker retired Maj. Gen. James Mukoyama.
Wilmette Unity March and Ceremony: 10:30 a.m. from St. Joseph Church to Lake Avenue, Park Avenue and Wilmette Avenue, ending at Village Hall. Afterward, there will be a ceremony to honor the 110 people from Wilmette who have died while serving, with village president Senta Plunkett as the host. It will include music by the Wilmette Community Band and singer Paul Reineck, who will sing the national anthem; wreath laying at the War Memorial by Nancy Fox, mother of the village's most recent fallen hero, Marine Sgt. John Phillips; a rifle salute by Wilmette Police; and reading of the names of the 110 fallen from Wilmette by local Scouts. The guest speaker will be Wilmette native Mike Rogers, a retired Admiral of the U.S. Navy who was appointed by President Obama as Director of the NSA and head of U.S. Cyber Command, having been confirmed unanimously by the U.S. Senate. Mike was leader of U.S. cyber security until his retirement in 2018.
Winnetka parade: 10 a.m. to noon at Village Green Park. Parade steps off at 10 a.m. from Glendale and Elm Street, heads east to Village Green Park for a ceremony; in case of bad weather, the ceremony will move indoors to the Skokie School auditorium.
