Chicago Region Sports Car Club of America meets April 20
Sports car racing enthusiasts will find out the latest exciting racing news from John Doonan, president of the International Motor Sports Association, at the next general membership meeting of the Chicago Region Sports Car Club of America.
The event will be held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, at K1 Speed, 2381 E. Army Trail Road in Addison. It is open to the public and there is no admission fee for attendance. Guests are invited to preregister on the website at MotorsportReg.com, but it is not required.
Doonan's topics will include: the new class structure of the 2022 IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship; the exciting influx of manufacturers to the IMSA series; the expanded relationship between IMSA and the SCCA; and the new Le Mans Daytona Hybrid (LMDh) car coming in 2023. It is anticipated to race in the IMSA and the FIA's World Endurance Championship, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Before becoming president of the International Motor Sports Association, Doonan was the face of Mazda's North American motor sports program for many years. He led the company's involvement in IMSA, the American Le Mans Series, Grand Am, MX-5 Cup and the USF2000 championship, as well as Mazda's driver development program.
Doonan's knowledge of racing is well-founded on his background. His father and grandfather were all racers, giving him a unique and acute perspective on the sport.
Author Burt Levy of The Last Open Road series will also be on hand as a special guest. He will have copies of his new book, "The 200 MPH Steamroller Book III - Out of the Mist," along with other books and merchandise available for purchase. Levy was born in Chicago and has won over 70 auto races and eight championships, driving some of the world's fastest and most famous automobiles. His passion for racing is showcased in his cult classic novels.
