Freshman Frum sets Glenbrook North cross country records
The Glenbrook North girls cross country program is in fine shape, considering a freshman just set a pair of program records.
Spartans freshman Juliet Frum placed 17th in the Illinois High School Association Class 3A girls cross country state final meet at Peoria's famous Detweiller Park on Nov. 6.
Frum's time of 17 minutes, 2.92 seconds established a new program record, and Frum earned the highest state finish by a Spartans girls runner, coach Bob LeBlanc said.
In 1979, Debbie Stetson finished in 18th place over a 2-mile course at Detweiller; Natalie Sandlow's 21st-place finish in 2018 was the program standard over 3 miles.
The daughter of 2022 Ironman World Championship qualifier Karen Frum and granddaughter of retired Northbrook Village Manager Sandy Frum and her husband, former Northbrook Public Library board and Northbrook Rotary Club President Carlos Früm, Juliet Frum is the fourth girl from Glenbrook North to earn all-state honors.
Gina Marianetti finished 23rd in Class AA in 1995. The first 25 finishers in boys and girls IHSA state finals are named all-state.
New Trier's Nick Falk finished second in the boys Class 3A race, 3 seconds behind winner Micah Wilson of St. Charles East. Falk led the Trevians to a fourth-place team finish in a meet won by Sandburg. York won girls Class 3A.
Juliet Frum had to push herself over the last half of the Detweiller double loop without her classmate and typical meet running partner, Maria Polyakov. Due to a stomach issue, Polyakov had to drop out of the race after about a mile and a half.
Polyakov and Frum finished first and second, respectively, at the Central Suburban League meet and at the Glenbrook South regional. Switching the order at the Hoffman Estates sectional, Frum and Polyakov finished fifth and sixth.
LeBlanc said 2009 was the last time two Glenbrook North freshman girls, Katherine Weber and Valerie Bobart, qualified for the state cross country meet. The next fall the Spartans tied for sixth place as a team.
"It's a pretty important run - no pun intended - for us," LeBlanc said.
