Clearbrook empowers its clients through employment
For some adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities, getting a job within the community is a priority. Clearbrook, an Arlington Heights-based nonprofit, helps make this dream a reality through its Community Employment Services Program.
Trained staff work to empower individuals to identify their employment goals and equip them with the skills and motivation to get there - all with the goal of helping them be as independent as possible.
The nonprofit offers a variety of options, including independent employment, supported employment, job training, and even employs the individuals to work at the organization in various roles.
Independent employment offers short-term job training to provide individuals with the skills they need to be successful and works with the employers to ensure a successful on-the-job relationship.
One parent says, "They were very thoughtful and considerate about the capabilities of the person they're dealing with. Clearbrook nailed it both times - finding the balance of keeping him challenged enough, but also not working him too hard."
The organization's Supported Employment Program offers an opportunity for individuals to work in a variety of supervised work settings within the community. Initially trained and supervised by a job coach, they receive the on-site training and support needed to be successful at their job.
John, a resident of a Clearbrook CILA, works at RTC five days a week with a job coach. He takes the bus from his home and does various janitorial tasks. He loves the vacuum, and says he just wants to be a "great person" when asked about his job.
For those who need help identifying where their interests lie and building the skills to get there, Clearbrook offers job training in a structured environment - providing specialized training across a variety of job options.
Another way Clearbrook empowers their individuals to meet career goals is by employing them at their organization in programs that double as vocational training sites. Document Destruction, based out of Palatine in Clearbrook's Getz building, offers shredding services to the surrounding community.
It provides a much needed service to the surrounding area, while also providing job opportunities to adults with disabilities. First-time customers receive 25% off.
Naturally Gifted in Crystal Lake is designed to offer vocational enrichment and hands-on skills training for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The store sells all-natural, therapeutic-grade essential oil products such as candles, hand soap, hand sanitizer, body scrubs and more.
Clearbrook individuals are involved in making the products, running the store and attending community events to sell products.
