JourneyCare Duck Race benefits kids with serious illnesses

To make sure their littlest patients and families get the care they deserve, staff at JourneyCare are creating a virtual twist on their annual Duck Race in Barrington.

The nonprofit hospice and palliative care agency typically hosts its annual Duck Race at the Barrington Park District Aqualusion Pool to raise funds for its All About Kids Pediatric program, which serves children living with serious illness and their families in Barrington and the entire Chicago region.

This year, JourneyCare is livestreaming the event from the home of a JourneyCare donor, where Duck Race participants can watch online to see their sponsored rubber ducks race to the finish line for prizes.

Sponsored rubber ducks race six heats down the waterslide, with winning ducks' sponsors earning prizes like tickets to the Chicago Botanic Garden and improv theater. In 2019, race supporters raised $21,000 to support the All About Kids program, which provides home hospice and palliative care to children.

JourneyCare also provides these services for adults and operates inpatient hospice centers in Barrington, Chicago, Glenview and Arlington Heights.

"We are so grateful to JourneyCare for helping my daughter Scarlett when she was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) years ago, providing us with services like nursing, a Child Life Specialist, pet therapy and volunteer support," says Rachel Sepe of Barrington, whose family is serving at the honorary chairs for this year's race.

"When your life is turned upside down, it is wonderful to have care, support and respect when you need it the most, right in your own backyard," she adds. "That is why we give back and ask others to join us on Aug. 29."

The plastic ducks will once again be racing down a waterslide for the 27th JourneyCare Duck Race at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29. Adopt a duck for $5, six for $25, or 25 for $100.

Those who sponsor a duck will then receive details on how to livestream the Duck Race this weekend.

JourneyCare provides expert health care for those living with serious illness across 13 counties in the Chicago region. For more information, visit journeycare.org.
