Schaumburg library invites families to participate in online anti-racism programs

Families can learn about race, racism and anti-racism together by participating in a hands-on, four-part series offered online by Schaumburg Township District Library. Each segment is shown live via Zoom and also live streamed at SchaumburgLibrary.tv for those who miss the broadcasts. To view the live broadcasts, register at SchaumburgLibrary.org.

The series, "Race, Racism and Anti-Racism" guides viewers through various aspects of race to foster understanding and prompt discussions. The first two segments have already taken place and are available at SchaumburgLibrary.tv.

Part 1, "Understanding Race as a Part of Identity," cover the basics, including background knowledge of the history of race in America, differences between race and ethnicity, and why these topics are important for families to discuss.

The second segment, "Racism … It's Complicated," highlights ways that racism shows up in America and why it's important that conversations about race also include understanding how racism affects everyone nationwide.

The final segments, "Anti-Racism as a Family: Parts 1 and 2" teach families how to start or continue their anti-racist journey and discover ways to speak up against racism in all areas of their lives. Part 1 takes place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, and Part 2 airs 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27. Register at SchaumburgLibrary.org.

This series is led by Asia Lyons, founder and lead consultant for Lyons Educational Consulting LLC, a consulting and coaching firm that supports schools and other non-profits in their creation of culturally responsive programming and curriculum.

In addition to online programming, Schaumburg Township District Library has books, movies and other library materials available in its buildings in Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates and Hanover Park. The buildings are open to the public with limited services and capacity in compliance with guidelines from the Illinois governor's office, public health officials and library associations.
