Arlington Heights Firefighters Association awards 3 scholarships

• The Arlington Heights Firefighters Association Local 3105 announced the winners of its Arlington Heights Firefighters Association Memorial Scholarships.

Maura Hogaboom was the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship. Hogaboom, a graduate of St. Viator High School, will be attending Notre Dame University in the fall.

Hannah Byrne and Brandon Lawrence each received a $500 scholarship. Byrne, a Prospect High School graduate, will attend Illinois State University. Lawrence is a graduate of Buffalo Grove High School. He will attend Tulane University in the fall.

The Arlington Heights Firefighters Association congratulates the scholarship winners and wishes them the best of luck in all their future endeavors.

• Palatine resident Brooklyn Mao, a student at William Fremd High School, was among 55 music students who spent two weeks in Door County, Wisconsin, studying at the Birch Creek Music Performance Center.

Mao was given the opportunity to hone her technical skills and learn firsthand all the aspects of life as a professional musician. During her two-week residency, Mao and the other students attending the Symphony Session, performed seven concerts alongside their teachers in front of paying concertgoers.

Birch Creek Music Performance Center is a residential summer music academy for advanced young musicians.

• Schaumburg native Alex Avila is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford. Petty Officer 3rd Class Alex Avila is an aviation maintenance administrationman aboard the carrier homeported in Norfolk, Virginia.

As a Navy aviation maintenance administrationman, Avila is responsible for dealing with all the paperwork to do maintenance on the aircraft and helicopters and making sure that everything is up to date as far as maintenance so they can fly and complete the mission.

Serving in the Navy is a continuing tradition of military service for Avila, who has military ties with family members who previously served. Avila says he is honored to carry on the family tradition.

• The Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association Educational Foundation the nonprofit educational arm of the Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association, awarded 23 college students a total of $56,000 in scholarship funding for the 2019-2020 academic year.

The Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association Educational Foundation awards annual academic scholarships to deserving Illinois college students pursuing hospitality management degrees throughout the country.

The 2019 winners included:

Jasmine Dinkins of Hanover Park, Johnson and Wales University; Rebecca Doman of Northbrook, University of Central Florida; Grace Murphy of Palatine, Purdue University; and Clara Pauker of Glenview, Purdue University.
