Matters of the Mind: North Shore Residents Gather to Learn About How to Reduce the Risk of Developing Alzheimer's Disease

Illinois residents will gather on Wednesday, May 29 to learn ways to reduce their risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States and there is currently no cure for the disease. Matters of the Mind is a free event where participants will hear from experts on what they can do to have a healthier brain.

"We accumulate risk factors over time which can impact our brain health and memory," said Smita Patel, DO, Director, Center for Brain Health, NorthShore University HealthSystem Neurological Institute. "Some big risk factors are high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, smoking, physical inactivity, and even poor sleep. It's important to continue learning and to make improvements to your lifestyle to reduce your risk of getting dementia."

"This is an incredibly exciting time in the field of Alzheimer's and dementia research," said Rebecca Edelmayer, PhD, Director of Scientific Engagement for the Alzheimer's Association. "A growing body of research is suggesting healthy lifestyle interventions may reduce our risk for dementia. That, combined with a drug, may be the future of Alzheimer's treatment and prevention."

Patel and Edelmayer will speak on the latest research on diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity, and social engagement, and how these may impact your risk of Alzheimer's and other dementias. The event will provide hands-on tools to help incorporate the recommendations into a plan for healthy aging. Experts will also discuss the state-of-the-art on diagnosis, treatment and prevention science in language everyone can understand.

More than 230,000 Illinois residents are living with Alzheimer's disease, and it kills more than breast and prostate cancer combined. It's never too early to reduce your risk for Alzheimer's, so join us for this evening about how to make your mind matter and work on risk reduction techniques.
