D114's Day of Service raises $44,000 for the PTA

Fox Lake Grade School District 114's fourth annual Day of Service was a huge success. The event raised just over $44,000 for the PTA, but, more importantly, gave students the opportunity to serve their community and grow as individuals.

Every dollar collected goes back to every student in the district and is used for educational assemblies, field trips, Family Nights, Principal Programs, athletic scholarships, Earth Week activities, school dances, the Lotus and Stanton libraries, Book Buddies, and the Mentor Program.

The Day of Service, started by Stanton School Principal Jess Sefick, grows each year, and this year was no exception.

New this year, The Clinton Family Fund matched donations dollar for dollar after $25,000.

The locations students provided services for were: The American Legion Post 703, YMCA Camp Duncan, Camp Henry Horner, Feed My Starving Children, Promote Fox Lake Project, Lakefront Park Building, Grant Township's Fall Fest, Fire Stations 2 and 3, The Cottages, Grant Community High School, Perricone's A Soup and Sandwich Joint, and the Fox Lake Police Department.

In addition to the off-site service projects, students at Lotus School decorated superhero capes for children's hospitals, made cards for veterans, made dog treats for local animal shelters, created festive place mats for the residents of The Cottages of Fox Lake, and provided care packages for the Fox Lake Fire Department and Police Department.

Superintendent Heather Friziellie extended a special "thank you" to the Day of Service sponsors: Access Elevator, American Family Insurance; Gordon Kiesgen Agency Inc.; Benny's Service Center; The Clinton Family Fund; Comfort Masters Heating and Air Conditioning; Computer Aided Technology; Culver's Fox Lake; Dam, Snell & Taveirne Ltd.; Dockers Restaurant and Lounge; The Education Association of Fox Lake; Garber Toyota; Guardian Material Handling; Ray Auto Group; Royal Sheet Metal; and W. Brothers Roofing.

Seventh-grader Maddie Watts chose to work at the Fox Lake Police Department.

"I love the Day of Service. It's important to give back to our community and help when we can," she said.

Sefcik planned an additional service opportunity and cultural learning experience on Oct. 19 for those students who raise at least $200 in pledges.
