Winning images of our weekly photo contest

The Daily Herald photo contest winners from the month of September.

Small Red Dragonfly. I find these to be very intriguing. They are so small, you can't see them unless you look for them, when you capture the photo you can see their intense, huge eyes. They do not use their six legs to walk ... only to perch. Cindy Spudich of Lake Zurich
This photo was taken on a recent visit to Seattle. I loved the comparison of these solar flowers/mushrooms with the famous Space Needle. Naomi Krodel of Batavia
While viewing the North West Territory Alliance Revolutionary War Re-enactment at Cantigny Park in Wheaton, I was able to photograph this Cannon as it fired. I had to set the camera on continuous shooting mode. It took over 100 shots to get this one. I used Manual setting mode 1/320 sec @ f11, auto ISO and a Monopod. Randy Link of Winfield
This photo was taken on litchfield beach, South Carolina, exactly one week before the hurricane hit. My family has been coming to the same beach for 60 years, and this was the first time my daughter Charley has seen it. She loved every minute of it. We could not get her to come inside at the end of the day, and we're out at 7 every morning. Here she is "chasing summer". Cathy Giometti of Northbrook
Stefanos Tsitsipas dives for the ball at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on 8/14/18. Unfortunately he had to come down, but thankfully was able to get back up and continue playing. Beverly Buchinger of Hoffman Estates
This is a picture from our garden of a species of Hummingbird Moth. There was a second type feeding on the nectar as well. I increased the shutter speed to freeze its wings as they are moving faster than we can see. Dave Hoffrage of Lombard
I visited the Harvard Balloonfest yesterday and I got an extra treat by seeing 3 very brave & talented "Skydivers" do their thing. They were able to inflate their balloons, about twelve of them. I was able to get many shots of both events and the Skydivers, who were almost an even bigger treat. I picked one the Skydivers descending with our American Flag. They were very quick to scoop up the flag, right after the diver hit the ground. Joan Farrell of McHenry
I took this photo at the entrance to the Hyatt Lodge in Oakbrook. Mom was lying in the grass a few feet away watching the young ones play. When the little ones saw me it appeared as Big brother was protecting little sister. Todd A. Sherlock of Downers Grove
Rainbow Mountain, Peru. Some friends and I took a trip to South America this past July. Peru was one of the countries we explored where we hiked up Rainbow Mountain. The soil is different colors because not all of the minerals on the mountain are the same. I love this picture because it reminds people that rainbows aren't just found in the sky. Hillary Scaletta of Hawthorn Woods
I took this at my grandma and grandpa's in Huntley at a pond near their house. Jack Anderson of Huntley
This is taken at the Cincinnati Zoo in 2017. Sumatran Orangutan was enjoying his afternoon snack. Mindy Michalak of Lake Villa
Sanibel causeway is my favorite spot to catch a quick sunset in the evening. It's a beautiful spot to sit with a glass of wine and end the day. Not too far from our condo in Fort Myers. Often we see dolphins or if the wind is right the wind surfers. This time someone decided to enjoy the sunset from their boat. Leslie Kleiner of Elgin
A baserunner uses "Matrix" reflexes to avoid a tag at second base. I took this shot of a 12u baseball game played at Dreams Park in Cooperstown, New York in July, 2018. Chip DeLorenzo of Naperville
This image was taken during the Grant Park Symphony's final concert of the year. To me, I felt like capturing the movement of the sky, the captive audience, the beautiful skyline and the powerful sounds of Carmina Burana made for a perfect event! David Genty of Bartlett
At the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, I attended the Raptor Free Flight demonstration last March. I was at the right place to catch this barn owl just as she was about to land on the baited perch. It was quite thrilling to see the powerful claws and the intense stare as the owl flew so close to me. Nancy Giardina of Libertyville
