Literacy and Citizenship Programs to Begin at Schaumburg Library

Literacy and U.S. citizenship classes are beginning this week and next at the Schaumburg Township District Library, 130 S. Roselle Rd., Schaumburg. Those who are interested in improving their English reading, writing and speaking skills can register for these free classes, which are presented in partnership with School District 214 Continuing Education.

Registration and testing for "Reading 101" will take place from 9 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Aug. 30 in the Adult Classroom. This 12-week, advanced reading class covers vocabulary, comprehension and fluency. Each person's reading level will be tested. Classes will be held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, beginning Sept. 4.

Registration and testing for "ESL Class: Intermediate" will be held from 12:30-3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 4 and Thursday, Sept. 6 in the Adult Classroom. Those interested in attending this free class need only register and have their reading level tested at one of the sessions. During the class, students will improve their English speaking and reading skills. "Citizenship Class" is slated from 6:30-930 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays, Sept. 7 through Nov. 30 in the Adult Classroom. Participants should bring their green card to register and to the first class. Lessons will cover how to answer U.S. citizenship questions from the N-400 application and obstacles to becoming a U.S. citizen.
