Arcada silent film series continues with Lillian Gish flick July 10
The Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St. in St. Charles, continues its "Silent Film Night" series with a screening of "The White Sister," a 1923 American drama film starring Lillian Gish and Ronald Colman, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 10. The movie will be accompanied live by Jay Warren on the historic 1927 Arcada organ. Tickets are $10. Visit www.arcadalive.com.
Angela Chiaromonte (Lillian Gish) and Captain Giovanni Severini (Ronald Colman) are deeply in love, but Angela's wealthy father, Prince Chiaromonte, does not know this and arranges her marriage, without her knowledge, to the son of Count del Ferice. However, the prince dies in an accident.
The film is directed by Henry King, an early Hollywood director who later won the Academy Award for Best Director for the 1943 film "The Song of Bernadette." The 1923 film is based on a 1909 novel of the same name by American author Francis Marion Crawford. It was later made into a pre-Code 1933 romance drama starring Clark Gable and Helen Hayes.
The series will continue on Aug. 7 with the 1926 crime drama "The Bells," featuring Lionel Barrymore and Boris Karloff.
On Sept. 11, the silent comedy film "Hula" will be shown. The 1927 film by American director Victor Fleming stars Clara Bow, an actress, nicknamed "The It Girl," who symbolized the Roaring '20s.
Kick off the Halloween season on Oct. 9 with the screening of the 1925 horror classic "The Phantom of the Opera," starring Lon Chaney Sr., Mary Philbin and Norman Kerry.
The Arcada Theatre opened in 1926 as a silent film and vaudeville theater. Relive those glory days of the Roaring Twenties' silent film era the first Tuesday of each month. Jay Warren, Chicago's foremost pipe organ expert will perform on the Arcada's 1926 classically restored 3/16 Marr Colton/Geneva organ.
Enjoy fresh popcorn while watching a silent film in a 1920s vaudeville theater.
In addition to popcorn, there are food and drink specials, including hot dogs, Bavarian pretzels, pizza grinders, and regular or jumbo Guinness beer brats.
Tickets for members of the Chicago Area Theatre Organ Enthusiasts or the Silent Film Society of Chicago are $8.
