Seven Mead student projects qualify for State History Day Competition

Seven projects by Mead Junior High School students were selected to participate in the Illinois History Day Competition May 3. The following students' projects qualified for the state event by earning superior scores at the Regional History Fair.

• Riya J., Nivedha K. and Araha U. for a performance called Abraham Lincoln and the Great Debates of 1858

• Ella S. for a website called The Color Line Has Been Crossed: The Chicago Race Riots of 1919 and the Chicago Commission on Race Relations

• Hiteshi P., Krisha P. and Manan P. for an exhibit called People Without a Nation: African Americans' Role at the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893

• Brooke Z., Ellie W. and Fiona M. for an exhibit called Radium Girls: The Fight Against Worker Injustice

• Shivshankar P. and Sreedevi P. for a documentary called The Equal Rights Amendment: Blessing or Burden?

• Emma R. and Meera P. for a documentary called What the Fight for Open Housing in Chicago Should've Done

According to http://www.nationalhistoryday.org, each year more than half a million students participate. Students choose a historical topic related to the theme, conduct research, analyze and interpret their sources, and then draw a conclusion about the significance of their topic. Students can present their work as a research paper, an exhibit, a performance, a documentary or a website. Professional educators and historians serve as the judges. The theme this year was Conflict and Compromise in History.
