Students receive Good Citizen awards from Perrin-Wheaton DAR

On Feb. 26, seniors from four high schools received Good Citizen awards from the Perrin-Wheaton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The winners are: Laura Virgilio, Wheaton Warrenville South High School; Alex Rueth, St. Francis High School in Wheaton; Kate Bove, West Chicago High School; and Grace Tulley, Wheaton North High School.

Brooke Pawlak, chairwoman of the chapter's Good Citizens committee, presented the awards to the students, who were chosen by their teachers and peers.

The chapter is part of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. A nonprofit, nonpolitical women's service organization, the DAR was founded in 1890 by women who wanted to honor their heritage and make a difference in their communities.

The Perrin-Wheaton chapter is named after the pioneer families who first settled the city of Wheaton. Jude Perrin and James Wheaton were the ancestors of 11 chapter members. In honor of these first settlers, the name Perrin-Wheaton was given to the chapter.

The chapter awards college scholarships; supports the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans; celebrates Constitution Week; awards ROTC medals; supports DAR schools for students with special needs; marches in Memorial Day and Independence Day parades.

The chapter also helps community members learn about their family trees, promotes the DAR History Essay Contest, honors immigrants who have become American citizens, collects supplies for homeless veterans, and more.
