Library Programs to Celebrate Black History Month

A variety of programs honoring Black History Month will take place in February at the Schaumburg Township District Library's locations in Schaumburg and Hanover Park. Registration is required to attend these free programs. To register, call (847) 923-3347.

Programs for children begin with "Art Studio" from 4-5 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21 in the Craft Room of the Schaumburg Library, 130 S. Roselle Rd. Children ages 6-9 are invited to make art inspired by African-American artist Alma Thomas. The following week, children ages 5-8 years-old can read and discuss "Trombone Shorty" by Troy Andrews in Book Explorers from 4-5 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 27 in the Craft Room.

Tweens ages 9-12 years are invited to learn about Madame CJ Walker, who created specialized products for African-American hair and became a self-made millionaire. The program, "DIY Spa," will take place from 4-5 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 8, in the Craft Room of the Schaumburg Library. It will culminate with participants making homemade beauty products.

Mae C. Jemison, the first African American woman to travel in space, will be featured in the "Out of this World" tween program from 4-5 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 28 at the Hanover Park Branch Library, 1266 Irving Park Rd. After learning about Jemison, the 9-12-year-olds will create constellation embroidery art.

Adults are invited to attend "Discussing Race and Current Events with your Kids" from 7-8:30 p.m, Monday, Feb. 12 in the Rasmussen North Room of the Schaumburg Library. Members of Facing History and Ourselves will facilitate a conversation about discussing race and other timely social issues with children.
