Sisters in Crime to Teach Writing Classes at Library

Chicago-area mystery authors will lead a series of free writing classes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Schaumburg Township District Library, 130 S. Roselle Rd. Books will be available for purchase and signing after the event. To register for the following classes, visit the Information Desk on the library's second floor, or call (847) 923-3347.

"Writing Action and Conflict: Tips and Tricks" will be led by Jamie Freveletti from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Freveletti will offer strategies for adding the critical element of conflict to a manuscript, as well as the action required to propel it forward and various ways to resolve it.

Lawyers for the Creative Arts will present "LawSmarts for Writers," presented by Marci Rolnik Walker from 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. Participants will gain an understanding of the ins and outs of copyright, contracts and clearance for writers. Rolnik Walker will explain how to read a publishing contract and how writers can contract out their work. Terms, negotiation techniques, privacy laws and more will be discussed.

Following a lunch break from 12:45-1:45 p.m., the classes will resume with "Breaking into the Fiction Market," taught by Christine Sneed from 1:45-2:45 p.m. Attendees will learn how to submit their fiction - both stories and book-length manuscripts - to agents, independent presses and periodicals that publish.

Diane Piron-Gelman will present "Having the Best Words" from 3-4 p.m. Participants will

learn about common writing errors, including grammar and punctuation mistakes, while acquiring self-editing tips and other strategies for improving their writing.

Those interested in the Sisters in Crime Writing Classes may attend all, one or any number of the classes. Registration is required.
