Handyman Program for Seniors is Now Available in Des Plaines, Two Area Townships

North West Housing Partnership Program (NWHP) has offered a senior Handyman Program in several Northwest suburban communities since 2014, and the program recently has grown to include seniors 60 years of age and older living in the city of Des Plaines, as well as in Palatine Township and Wheeling Township.

NWHP is a nonprofit based in Schaumburg, Illinois, and is offering the expanded services through a partnership with Northwest Suburban Housing Collaborative (NWSHC). This program is also made possible through funding from the City of Des Plaines and AgeOptions, a nonprofit organization that connects older adults with resources and service options to live their lives to the fullest.

Other communities where handyman services have already been available include Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, Palatine and Rolling Meadows.

"We are very excited to be able to offer this valuable service to more seniors in additional communities and Townships," said Robyn Sandys, executive director of NWHP. "This program assists with a variety of home maintenance projects that are reasonably priced for senior citizens."

Repairs are completed by insured and licensed handymen who have been vetted by NWHP. Examples of the types of projects handled include grab bars, window, sink or toilet repairs, gutter cleaning and curtain or picture hanging. Fees are $10, $20 or $30 an hour depending on the service type and income. In certain cases, a fee may not apply, and emergency repair services are not available.

To learn more, and to apply for this program, email Michelle Hill at michellehill@nwhp.net or call NWHP Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 847-969-0561. Area residents are also invited to inquire about other home repair programs for seniors and the disabled offered by NWHP.
