Temple B'nai Israel offers a new series of adult education classes on Judaism

Aspects of Judaism, Jewish traditions and the Hebrew language are fascinating topics that can be approached from many different directions. Temple B'nai Israel, 400 N Edgelawn Drive in Aurora, recognizes the wide array of knowledge in this complex subject matter. That's why they are offering a series of adult education courses for those who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of Jewish principles.

Rabbi Edward Friedman will provide you with this rich awareness in his ongoing series of specialized classes.

Every Thursday from 7:30 to 9 p.m., they invite you to attend the "Introduction to Judaism" course. You'll get thoughtful information about subjects that include the Sabbath, Jewish holidays, the Jewish calendar, keeping kosher, the Bible, life cycle events, prayer and synagogue rituals. It's a class that provides a contemporary perspective on Jewish life.

Members of the temple can attend free. Nonmembers will only need to pay a nominal fee of $5 per session.

In a separate course that follows the Saturday morning services at approximately 12:30 p.m., you're welcome to join a study group on Jewish laws. This group will begin by looking at a recent book entitled "Gender Equality and Prayer in Jewish Law." The first topic will concentrate on what our tradition says about a woman's role in prayer services. There is no fee associated with joining this study group.

Additionally, if you'd like to learn more about Hebrew, Temple B'nai Israel has two ongoing classes, depending on your grasp of this language. The first one is an introduction to Hebrew reading on Sundays from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. You will need to purchase the textbook, but the course itself is free. However, they encourage your contribution to the education fund.

If you already know how to read Hebrew, you might consider the second class. Every Sunday from 10 to 11 a.m., students will focus on learning the Hebrew of the prayer book. Again, any contribution you can make to the education fund is much appreciated.

Whether or not you're Jewish, they welcome you to take part in the adult education classes. Every class is open to Temple B'nai Israel members and nonmembers alike. All of the classes are hosted at the temple, 400 N. Edgelawn Drive in Aurora.

Rabbi Friedman and the temple community look forward to studying with you!
