Highwood's Seventh Annual Garlic Fest A Stench To Remember

HIGHWOOD, IL (AUGUST 17, 2017) - Despite the rain, the 7th Annual Highwood Garlic Fest attracted waves of people to Everts Park with the smell of garlic wafting through the air on Wednesday, August 16. Hosted by Celebrate Highwood, Garlic Fest showcased the beloved flavor of garlic, known for its culinary and medicinal purposes, while attendees sampled a variety of garlic creations from out-of-the-ordinary garlic infused chocolate, cookies, funnel cakes, garlic infused cocktails, as well as classic, savory options like pastas, sandwiches, sauces and spreads.

Attendees voted for their favorite garlic bites and overwhelmingly awarded "Best Sweet Garlic Creation" to Maryanne's Sweet Treats of Highland Park. "Best Savory Garlic Creation" went to Toadstool Pub of Highwood for their Garlic infused Bloody Mary. Other garlic fan favorites included: Garlic Infused Margaritas and Garlic Infused Mahi Mahi Tacos from La Casa de Isaac; Lemon Garlic Chicken from La Plancha Loca; Garlic Parmesan Popcorn from Popcorn Jester; Garlic Dill Perch from The Mean Wiener; Philly Steak Egg Roll with garlic sauce from Roll With It; Carmelized Garlic Chocolate Truffles from Sweet Impact Chocolates; Garlic Bratwurst and Escargot from Wooden Nickel and many more.

Celebrate Highwood also crowned Scott Allen of Highwood as its first ever Garlic King for singing his own personal rendition of "Hamilton", and Giuliana Popoff, age 10 of Deer Path Middle School in Lake Forest, was crowned Garlic Princess. Winners were determined on their speech, appearance, audience applause and by judges Liz Bearwald of Bent Fork Bakery and Melissa Sands of Vintage Garage Chicago. The new Garlic King and Garlic Princess were awarded bragging rights and presented with a sash and crown and will represent the City of Highwood at upcoming events throughout the year.

The public also voted for their favorite tomato in the 10th Annual Highwood Historical Society's Terrific Tomato Contest. Of the 60 tomato entries, Luana Cioni of Highwood won the "Most Terrific Tomato in Town" and a $100 gift certificate from Sunset Foods. Mickey Fiore of Highwood took home the People's Choice award along with a gift basket from the Highwood Historical Society.
