Winfield remembers its fallen soldiers

Winfield held it's annual Memorial Day Ceremony Monday at Creekside Park with an event honoring Winfield veterans. Hosted by Winfield Boy Scout Troop 575, the ceremonies included memorial readings, a flag-raising ceremony, the laying of flowers, and a speech from Winfield Village Board President, Erik Spande.

"Our veterans made these sacrifices so that the rest of us can live with the freedoms and privileges that we sometimes take for granted," said Spande. "Memorial Day is a reminder to all of us that the privileges we enjoy were purchased at a great price, and that price was paid by our veterans."

Spande also noted that the majority of the Winfield Trustees are veterans including Jack Bajor, Phil Mustes, Jim McCurdy, and Dennis Hogan.

The crowd that attended the ceremony included Winfield veterans from Korea and Vietnam, representatives of the Winfield Police and Fire Departments, and members of the Village's Board of Trustees.
