Des Plaines woman earns community college association's award
Des Plaines resident Eileen Cukierski, senior executive assistant to the president and secretary to the board of trustees of Oakton Community College, was presented with the 2015 Professional Board Staff Member Award by the Illinois Community College Trustees Association. The honor, presented at the association's annual award luncheon June 5 in Schaumburg recognized exemplary performance in support of an Illinois community college board. To receive the award, a nominee must demonstrate a service leadership role toward the members of the board of trustees, administrators, faculty, students and community; assist the board in developing or initiating innovative or special projects for the institution; pursue professional development and continuing educational activities at the local, state and/or national level; and exhibit outstanding personal characteristics.
• Terry R. Hendrickson of Park Ridge was elected first vice president of the Union League Club of Chicago, a 136-year-old, nonpartisan civic, cultural and philanthropic organization. From 2005-08, Hendrickson served as a club director and chaired the athletic committee. He also currently serves as president of the Union League Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago one of the three independent philanthropic foundations of the Union League Club of Chicago. Hendrickson is vice president of Business Development-Midwest for the Chicago Title Insurance Company's National Commercial Services.
• Schaumburg Park District volunteer Richard Ruffolo was honored by HandsOn Suburban Chicago with the President's Volunteer Service Award for volunteering 187 hours at Volkening Heritage Farm. A volunteer must complete at least 100 hours to be nominated. Ruffolo retired from education in 1990, and became a volunteer at Heritage Farm 20 years ago after reading about volunteer positions. At Heritage Farm, Ruffolo contributes in various ways, including teaching summer camps, leading field trip programs and assisting at special events. He especially enjoys working with children and caring for the farm's animals.
• Streamwood native Ben Moskow, 16, joins an elite group of Pokémon players to earn a top spot at the U.S. National Championships. After three days of head-to-head Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) battles in Indianapolis, Indiana, Moskow clinched fourth in the TCG Masters Division. Along with the top finish, he also earned valuable Championship Points that will count toward a potential invite to the 2015 Pokémon World Championships, Aug. 21-23, in Boston, Massachusetts.
• Air Force Guard Airman 1st Class Monica A. Armea graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Armea, a 2010 Maine West High School graduate, is the daughter of Imelda Capa of Addison.
