Science Grant Awarded to Schaumburg Township District Library

More science materials will be available in the Schaumburg Township District Library's (STDL) kidsZone thanks to a $2,000 grant awarded by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Chicago Section and the "Science Kits for Public Libraries" Advisory Committee. The library's Youth Services Director, Melissa Jones, said she has used the grant money to purchase a LEGO® Mindstorms kit, Prism Bricks, Super Strux, Kid Knex Transportation and Neon Glowing Electroluminescent Wires. Additionally, the grant will help fund a summer daytrip to the Discovery Center Museum in Rockford.

"We are looking forward to expanding our programming to promote science, the scientific process and initiate interest in invention and engineering," Jones said. "Funding from this grant has assisted us with purchasing a variety of building kits for parent and child to use together. We have purchased kits that focus on building simple machines and creating electrical components."

Jones explained that, for a long time, the library has been involved in STEAM, an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics programs. The grant money is helping the library continue the STEAM initiative, she added.
