STEM Speaker Series for 2013-14

Thursday, Sept. 12: Stem Cell Technologies 2013 ― A look at the New Medical Applications. There is a great deal of interest in stem cells and cloning today and their use in medical research and therapy. Sam Rhine begins with the basics of human embryology and then answers the basic “what, when, where, why and how” questions surrounding both embryonic and adult stem cells, with a special emphasis on the new manufactured stem cells called iPSCs.

Thursday, Oct. 10: Engineering Night ― Explore your College and Career Opportunities. Kick off the evening with an introduction to the college experience of an engineering major. Then visit with a variety of representatives from colleges and universities to explore your education pathways. Chat with professional engineers in the area to learn about their careers and the different specialties (mechanical, electrical, civil, computer, materials, etc.).

Thursday, Feb. 13: Chemistry Magic ― The Chemistry of Teaching. For years, chemistry teacher Bob Becker has collected and/or developed many fun and memorable chemistry demonstrations. This talk will highlight a dozen of his most intriguing demos and show the parallels between them and the art of learning. Come get some pearls of wisdom/sage advice from a 29-year veteran of the classroom.

Friday, Feb. 21: Role of Ethics in Engineering. Celebrate National Engineers Week by hearing a panel of professional engineers discuss the ethical challenges engineers face and how their decisions will influence product designs and customer safety.

Thursday, March 13: Nanotechnology Family Festival. Students of all ages are invited to discover nanoscale science and engineering applications with hands-on activities. Explore the impact on the technology of today and potential for continued innovation in the future and tour CLC's nanotechnology labs at the CLC Southlake Campus in Vernon Hills.

Thursday, May 8: Robotics in Action. Discover the robotics activities happening in Lake County. Local robotics teams will showcase their projects. Learn about robotics technologies from all aspects of life.
