Rolling Meadows, Schaumburg fall short in regional title games
The Rolling Meadows softball team may have been a No. 10 seed, but they gave No. 2 New Trier a battle to the finish in the championship game of the Trevians’ Class 4A regional on Saturday in Winnetka.
New Trier (28-2) scored once in the fourth and fifth innings to pull out a 2-0 shutout behind junior pitcher Allison Quigley, who recorded 11 strikeouts.
Mustangs senior ace Sara Brunleib (14-13) had 2 strikeouts while tossing a 7-hitter.
The Trevians will face No. 6 Lake Zurich in Wednesday’s semifinal of the Rolling Meadows sectional.
Quigley threw a 4-hitter on Saturday.
“She is probably the best pitcher we’ve seen all season,” said Mustangs coach Tony Wolanski. “So I guess that’s why they are 28-2.”
Freshman KikaMahoe had a double for one of the Mustangs’ 4 hits in the game. Jenny Watson, Hannah Whidden and Chloe Prodanovic each went 1-for-3.
Mahoe was the only Mustang to get past first base. She advanced to third on a groundout in the seventh before Quigley struck out the final two batters.
The only other baserunner for Meadows (19-15) was Lane Winkler, who walked.
“Sara (Brunlieb) pitched great,” Wolanski said. “We played well. The last 15 games of the season were much better for us. This is the team I thought we’d be. We had a chance to beat a really good team in a regional championship.”
Glenbard North 8, Schaumburg 6: Glenbard North’s Sydney Benz, a Louisville recruit, hit a two-out, 2-run homer in the sixth inning to break the 6-6 tie in the championship game of the Schaumburg Class 4A regional. The No. 6-seeded Saxons finished at 20-10.
