Schaumburg, Conant girls’ water polo players to raise funds for cancer society

For the second year in a row, girls’ water polo teams from two District 211 schools were inspired to use some friendly competition to collectively raise money for cancer research.

The girls’ water polo teams at Schaumburg and Conant high schools have joined forces to raise money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life with two fundraiser games on April 23, at 4:45 p.m. and 5:45 p.m., at Conant High School.

“We wanted to support a nationwide organization that also benefits our local community,” said Schaumburg High School senior and team co-captain Ashley Johnson. “Cancer is something that hits home for everyone in some way, and we wanted to support this valuable cause.”

Last year, Johnson and co-captain Casey Houts reached out to Conant’s captains to make the event a joint effort between the Saxons and the Cougars. Each team had a fundraising goal of $500. The teams raised more than $4,100 for Schaumburg Relay For Life, which was more than four times the original goal.

“I am so incredibly impressed by what these kids do for not only their schools, but for others within the community,” said Beth Donatucci, head coach of Schaumburg High School’s girls’ water polo team. “They stand for what athletics are about — coming together for a greater good while sharing a passion.”

While admission to the game is free, both teams are selling T-shirts for $15 during the week of the game, $5 of which will go directly to the Schaumburg Relay For Life. There will also be a bake sale during both games, and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to Relay For Life. Last year, the bake sale brought in an additional $300 for the organization.

“Knowing the qualities of both the Conant and Schaumburg girls in and out of the water really shows that these girls are more than just great polo players and student athletes,” said Justin Bickus, head coach of Conant’s team. “It really shows the integrity and great character that we expect in our sport, schools and the kind of kids we have representing our teams.”
