Celebrate National Library Week with a craft fair, flea market and fun fair

By Susan Miura

“A World of Resources at Your Library” will be the theme of this year’s National Library Week celebration at the Schaumburg Township District Library. Join the fun on Sunday, April 14, by coming to our World Bazaar Craft Fair and Flea Market, a Fun Fair for kids, or the Book Walk (like a cake walk) in the Audiovisual Theatre. Try your hand at the prize wheel in the lobby, while listening to international music performed by pianist Wayne Richards.

The celebration will take place from noon to 3 p.m., except for the World Bazaar, which will remain open until 4 p.m. And the best part is … all of the activities are free and no registration is required.

At the World Bazaar Craft Fair and Flea Market in the Rasmussen Room, you’ll find tables laden with unique handmade items created by local crafters and artists. These will include jewelry, handblown glass, puppets, floral pieces, embellished handbags and more. Additionally, international, fair trade items will be on sale from Gifts of the World, which helps support artisans in developing countries. All ages are welcome, but children age 10 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Prices are not negotiable and only cash and checks will be accepted.

In addition to the beautiful crafts, you will have the opportunity to peruse flea market tables with gently used, bargain priced treasures. Among these will be spring décor, books, toys, small household appliances, electronic games and DVDs. Secondhand clothes, including jackets and” like-new” girls dresses, will also be among the items for sale. There will even be brand new items, including small kitchen appliances. A portion of the World Bazaar proceeds will be donated to the Schaumburg Township Food Pantry.

Next door, in the Adult Classroom, will be a Fun Fair for kids with games, prizes, and three airbrush facepainters. Children will enjoy watching cartoons while playing games or waiting to have their faces artistically designed. Children age 8 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

If you enjoy cake walks, you won’t want to miss the Book Walk in the Audiovisual Theatre. All ages can join the fun. Simply walk around the colored squares until the music stops, and you just might win a book! We have many titles from which to choose.

In the lobby, be sure to visit the information tables and pick up a “thank you” gift, then head upstairs for a tour of the library’s state-of-the-art Teen Place, which opened in November 2012. Normally available only to students ages 12 through 19, Teen Place will welcome all ages during the National Library Week Celebration. Come and see the Digital Production Studio, collaboration stations, game room and more.

No registration is needed for any of the National Library Week events, so feel free to grab family and friends and head over to the Schaumburg Township District Library from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 14. You’ll be glad you did!
