Endorsements: Christensen, Howell, Jette, Myers for Cary Dist. 26 school board

A field of nine candidates, fueled by anger over communication issues and special programs in an atmosphere of financial struggle, is packing the ballot for four open seats in Cary District 26 school board. On one side, newcomers Christopher Christensen, Josh Howell and Scott Epstein and incumbents Julie Jette, Chris Jenner and Floyd Myers generally agree with the steps the district has taken to cut expenses. On the other, newcomers Jennifer Crick, Bruce Ritter and Bradley Slavik find disfavor with the current board. Epstein and Crick are strong candidates, as is Jenner, whom we’ve endorsed before but who now is also seeking election to serve simultaneously on the McHenry County College Board of Trustees, a dual service that we cannot endorse. The board needs an effective mix of fresh ideas and experience, though, especially considering the still-sensitive state of the district, and that mix is best represented by Howell, Christensen, Jette and Myers. Although newcomers to the board, Howell and Christensen have both served on the district’s curriculum committee. Myers offers a broad vision coupled with a focus on tangible results. Jette, whom we’ve also endorsed before, remains active and engaged in handling the tough decisions.
