Midwestern Mini-Medical School with lectures open to community

Community members can learn about current topics in healthcare at Midwestern University's Mini-Medical School. The Mini-Medical School will be held from 6:30 to 8:15 PM on October 18th, October 25th, November 1st, and November 8th, at the University's campus located at 555 31st Street in Downers Grove.

Each lecture is presented by a healthcare professional at Midwestern University which is the home of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Chicago College of Pharmacy, the College of Health Sciences, and College of Dental Medicine-Illinois. Topics to be covered include:

• Cuts, Bumps and Bruises – When Is It a Big Deal? – Learn more about the various wounds (lacerations, abrasions, puncture wounds) and soft tissue and bony injuries (contusions, fractures, sprains/strains) and explain the anatomy, physiology and assessment and care for these injuries. Participants will also learn when a visit to the doctor may be in order.

• Dental Curriculum for the Modern Dentist – Designed for those with an interest in dental education, this lecture will focus on the novel integrated curriculum that is being used at Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine- Illinois. The group will also visit the dental simulation clinic for a hands-on demonstration of a simulated patient and a demonstration of the dental equipment that is used to prepare the dental student for the clinical treatment of patients.

• Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems – This lecture and lab will present the basic anatomy of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Some disease processes of the heart and lungs will be discussed. The anatomical structure and function of the heart and lungs will be the primary focus of the laboratory, and students will be guided through a hands-on opportunity to explore the human heart and lungs.

• Going with the Flow: An Infectious Diseases Perspective of the Gastrointestinal Tract – Learn about infections and immunity of the stomach, upper and lower gastrointestinal tract. The process of stomach ulcer formation will be discussed in addition to the common foods and their associated gastrointestinal disturbances. Topics in health protection, as they relate to diarrheal disease will also be presented

Participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and are able to register for individual dates. The cost of the entire program is $25; a single session is $10.
